Autodesk Inventor problem with Win10

Eldest son has started a new high school class – Engineering. I’m excited for him because Engineering Science was one of the classes that I really enjoyed. Back in the day, we used slide rules, sketched on huge sheets of paper with hard pencils, used sin/cos/tan to calculate angles and load bearing values. Things were different back then but the basic principles were the same! Computers were something that I only ever saw on my weekly dose of Star Trek, Space 1999 or Blakes7.

Autodesk inventor problemNowadays, the students will be learning how to use Autocad 2014 on their laptops. Tapping away and creating perfect technical drawings in the space of a few minutes.

*sigh* Kids nowadays – /insert rant about how hard it was working down the mines when I was a kid 🙂

But I digress…

So, Nate inherited my two year old IBM Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 13s. It’s a solid laptop, touchscreen and perfect for him to carry to from school and to play with Autocad on. Or so we thought.

The problem with Autocad Inventor is that it does not run on Windows 10. Tried everything including all compatibility settings, various suggest registry tweaks and even tried launching it standing on one leg, with an arm in the air, chanting an ancient Sumerian mantra. Nothing worked. After reading gubbins on various forums we discovered that be downgrading to Win7 that Autocad14 should work. So the fun began. I dug out an old Win7 ISO and we installed on the laptop.

Lenovo Yoga Win7 – Wireless problem

Problem – The standard Win7 install does not recognize the Lenovo Wireless Driver on the Yoga.

Solution – Grab a copy of RealTeks Utility and Driver Auto Installation Program (Support XP/Vista/Win7/Win8)(Install Shield v1.00.0199)

Install the driver, and *boom* wireless is now working under Win7.

Now you just need to

  1. install the wireless driver
  2. connect to your wireless network and get online
  3. Install Win7 updates from windowsupdate
  4. download and install Autocad Inventor 2014 from http://manage.autodesk.com/cep/#products-services/all

problem solved…

Come on Autodesk – fix Autocad to run on Win10 please?
