IBM i Basics – How to request and use a free IBM i Virtual System from PUB400

Did you know PUB400 will give you a free IBM i Account to use over the Cloud? Log in, play and learn IBM i operations and programming 🙂

Who and what is PUB400?

Dont be fooled by it’s old fashioned sounding name. This is not the AS/400 of your grandparents.

PUB400 has been serving the IBM i community for almost fifteen years. They report to serve more than seventy thousands users around the world. I think it’s a great learning environment, to play with the most advanced business hardware The IBM Power System running operating system “IBM i” — this machines forebears were the AS400 (running OS400) and iSeries (running i5/OS).

I’m biased but I definitely think IBM i is the best integrative platform for managing and running business oriented workloads. IBM i happily runs old AS400 applications from pre-internet days, plus tons of other legacy software alongside modern open source techniques.

If you are an a trainee programmer, a novice IBM-i operator, or simply an Information Tech Nerd who wants to logon to an IBM i System to see what makes it tick then – this might be the course for you!.

In this course we will walk through the process of creating a PUB400 Account, requesting our own personal IBM i Server, Setting up VPN for access and then logging on and playing around.
