What’s new, Ubuntu 18.04 Linux?
The biggest change is heralded as the switch from the traditional Ubuntu UNITY DESKTOP in favour of GNOME.
I was a little nervous about what i was going to see when I upgraded my trusty old Thinkpad W700 from Ubuntu 17 to Ubuntu 18. But, surprise surprise, the desktop looks almost identical. It seems that all the Gnomish changes are under the covers.
Ubuntu’s GNOME theme looks very close to the previous Unity desktop. All the functionality of Unity is there, it just might be in a different place. The obvious change is the minimize, maximize and close buttons have switched sides to the Right. I kind of like it as it’s similar to my Windows Machines.
Upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04 Beaver is Simple
I found this great page describing the process.
It essentially says
Apply all the latest Ubuntu Updates to your current 17 version then press Alt + F2 on your keyboard to open the run command box… this box allows you to run Ubuntu commands… when it opens, type the commands below to press Enter.
update-manager -cd
After that, it should open the upgrade wizard to upgrade Ubuntu
Click the Upgrade button to begin the wizard… follow the on-screen instructions and continue.
In Conclusion
I’ve always been a bit of a Linux fanboy. This version of Ubuntu Linux stands head and shoulder above all previous versions I’ve played with. It’s slick, solid and just works perfectly. Nice job.
