The ADDCATSTR command in TURNOVER® for iSeries v100 is part of the Wisedesk functionality described in Chapter 9: Working with Projects and Tasks. It’s used to enhance how tasks are filtered and organized within help trees—those hierarchical structures that categorize project tasks and documentation.

The ADDCATSTR is command lets you add search strings to the task selection criteria of a category or subcategory. It works just like choosing option 1=Add on the Work with Category Search Strings panel.

ADDCATSTR Add Category Search String 1

What ADDCATSTR Does: The command adds a search string to a category or subcategory in a help tree. This search string becomes part of the task selection criteria, meaning it helps TURNOVER automatically associate tasks with the correct category based on matching keywords or patterns.

It’s essentially the command-line equivalent of using option 1=Add on the Work with Category Search Strings panel.

Here’s a breakdown of the key fields you’ll encounter when using ADDCATSTR:

ParameterDescription
TREEThe name of the help tree you're modifying
PATHThe path within the tree (i.e., category/subcategory)
SEQUENCEThe order in which this search string should be evaluated
NEWSTRINGThe actual search string to be added
NEWSEQUENCEOptional new sequence number (defaults to *SAME)
SCOPEDefines the scope of the search (e.g., *ALL, *PROJECT, *RESOURCE)
CASESENSITIVEWhether the search string should be case-sensitive (*YES or *NO)

This command is especially useful when:

  • You’re building a custom help tree to guide developers through project tasks

  • You want to automate task categorization based on keywords like “RPGLE,” “API,” or “WordPress”

  • You’re refining the Wisedesk interface to make it more intuitive for your team

For example, if you’re creating a help tree for IBM i modernization tasks, you might use ADDCATSTR to add search strings like "VS Code" or "Metro Mirror" to the relevant categories so tasks containing those terms are automatically grouped.
