Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Understand alternate distribution methods available in TURNOVER® for iSeries (now Lifecycle Manager) beyond standard SNADS, including TCP/IP, FTP, Net/Wrk400, and Connect:Direct.
- Configure overrides to switch distribution methods for specific remotes or globally.
- Set up system requirements and gather information needed for FTP, Net/Wrk400, and Connect:Direct configurations.
- Send application definitions remotely using SNADS or alternatives.
This summary condenses the 12-page supplement (Version 100, January 2010) into a guide for administrators managing distributed IBM i environments. Note: This is based on 2010 documentation for TURNOVER® for iSeries v100. As of October 24, 2025, the product is TURNOVER® Lifecycle Manager Release 2.100 (2022). While core concepts may remain, check current Administrator’s Guide or UNICOM support for updates, as newer versions integrate modern protocols and may deprecate older ones like SNADS.
Key Concepts
- Standard vs. Alternate Methods: Default is SNADS (*SNA); alternates use TCP/IP for better performance in modern networks.
- Overrides: Global or per-remote settings to switch methods (e.g., *FTP, *NETWRK, *CNDIR).
- Requirements: Vary by method; include OS levels, installed software, and network configs.
- Application Definitions: Can be sent remotely via SNADS; alternates may require manual export/import.
- Prerequisites: TURNOVER® installed on all systems; configured remotes in app definitions.
Module 1: Alternate Methods Support
TCP/IP Support
- Enables *FTP for distributions; requires TCP/IP configured on all IBM i systems.
- Benefits: Faster than SNADS in IP networks.
Using SNADS
- Default method (*SNA); reliable for legacy networks.
- Sending App Definitions: Export via TURNOVER 1 > F22 > Option 3 (Send to Remote); receive on remote via Option 4.
Module 2: Overriding the Network Distribution Method
- Global Default: Set in TURNOVER 1 > F22 > Option 1 (Utilities) > 3 (Global Defaults) > F10 (Network) > Change to *FTP/*NETWRK/*CNDIR.
- Per-Remote Overrides: For specific targets, use TURNOVER 1 > Select App > Option 3 (Work with Levels) > Select Level > F10 (Remotes) > Option 8 (Overrides).
- Adding/Changing Override: Provide remote name, method (*FTP etc.), user ID/password if needed.
- Deleting Override: Option 4 on override list.
Module 3: Configuring for FTP
System Requirements
- OS/400 V4R4+ with TCP/IP; FTP server started (STRTCPSVR *FTP).
- TURNOVER® v5.1+ on all systems.
Information Requirements
- Remote System: Host name/IP.
- User ID/Password: For FTP login (e.g., TURNOVER profile).
- Library/File Names: Use defaults or customize.
- Setup: Add *FTP override; test with form distribution.
Module 4: Configuring for Net/Wrk400
System Requirements
- Net/Wrk400 installed and configured; TURNOVER® v5.1+.
Information Requirements
- Node/Session Names: For connection.
- User ID/Password: Authentication.
- Setup: Add *NETWRK override; configure sessions.
Module 5: Configuring for Connect:Direct
System Requirements
- Connect:Direct for iSeries installed; TURNOVER® v5.1+.
Information Requirements
- Node Name: Remote Connect:Direct node.
- User ID/Password: If required.
- Setup: Add *CNDIR override; define processes.
Assessment and Next Steps
- Quiz Ideas: What is the default distribution method? Steps to override for FTP? Requirements for Connect:Direct?
- Practice: In a test environment, set a global override to *FTP and distribute a sample form.
- Further Learning: Administrator’s Guide (Release 2.100) for current configs; Supplement #14 for change processes. Contact UNICOM support (tech.support@unicomsi.com or +1-603-924-8818) for 2025 updates or access to portals
