IBM i Access for Web

IBM i Access for Web is a web-based application that allows users to access and interact with IBM i (formerly known as AS/400 or iSeries) applications and data from a web browser.

It provides a range of features, including support for 5250 emulation, system console access, and data transfer between the IBM i and a user's local system.

IBM i Access for Web is often used by organizations to provide remote access to their IBM i systems for users who may not have direct access to a terminal or who need to access the system from a variety of locations.

NOTE: IBM i Access for Web is no longer supported by IBM. Currently, it is available for download on the Entitlement Software Support (ESS) website under SS1. You can also order a physical copy through eConfigurator. But since it's no longer supported software, it will NOT be receiving updates or fixes. As with all unsupported software, you will need to monitor for any security exposures going forward.

Using IBM i Access for Web to Enhance User Experience and Productivity

IBM i Access for Web - Licensed Programs

IBM i Access for Web offers a modern interface that can replace the traditional green-screen 5250 session, improving user perception and productivity. Here's how it achieves this:

Modern Look and Feel: Replacing the outdated green-screen with a web-based interface provides users with a more familiar and contemporary experience. This change alone can enhance user perception of the system's modernity.

Cross-Platform Accessibility: IBM i Access for Web allows users to connect from various devices with a web browser, including desktops, laptops, iPads, and more, eliminating the need for client installation.

Enhanced Navigation: The web interface replaces function keys with buttons and provides clickable menu links instead of typed commands, streamlining navigation and reducing keystrokes.

Command Caching: The web browser caches commands entered on the command line, minimising repetitive typing and boosting efficiency.

HTML-Enabled Screens: Screens enabled with HTML offer clickable links for menu options, simplifying user interaction and reducing the reliance on traditional keyboard input.

IBM i Access for Web has the following advantages:

  • It is server based.
  • It is implemented using Javaâ„¢ servlet and portlet technology.
  • It uses industry standard protocols: HTTP, HTTPS, and HTML.
  • It is lightweight, requiring only a browser on the client.
  • It provides a 5250 user interface and access to IBM i resources, such as the IBM i database, integrated file system, printers, printer output, jobs, batch commands, and messages.
