What is PASE?
IBM i PASE (Portable Application Solutions Environment) is a runtime environment on the IBM i operating system that allows users to run AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) applications, including those that use the X11 graphical user interface, on the IBM i platform.
PASE for i is an optionally installable component of the operating system.
PASE for i is free of charge on all IBM i servers.
The build system operates with Unix and GNU tools nestled within PASE, so if PASE isn't already part of your digital toolkit, it's time to install it. Think of it as the secret sauce for your build system burger!
To install PASE for i on your system, follow these steps:
- On an IBM i command line, enter GO LICPGM
- Select 11 (Install licensed program).
- Select Option 33 (5770-SS1 - Portable Application Solutions Environment).
- Optional: Install additional locales.
The PASE for i product installs only the locale objects that are associated with the language features that you have installed on the IBM i operating system. If you need locales that are not included with the language features on your system, you need to order and install additional IBM i language features.
Installing IBM PASE for i
PASE for i is an optional component of the operating system that you can install as needed. It’s required if you want to use it or run software that depends on PASE for i support.
Some system software, like the enhanced Domain Name System (DNS) server and the ILE C++ compiler, needs PASE for i support. So, you might still have to install PASE for i even if you don’t plan on using it directly.
PASE for i is available at no cost on all IBM i servers. To set it up on your system, follow these steps:
- On an IBM i command line, enter GO LICPGM.

PASE for i only installs the locale objects linked to the language features already set up on your IBM i operating system. If you need locales that aren’t part of your current language features, you’ll have to order and install the extra IBM i language features.
PASE for i offers a subset of AIX® runtime libraries on the IBM i system. The IBM i license lets you use any library code included with IBM i, but it doesn’t cover AIX libraries not shipped with PASE for i. All AIX products require separate licensing from IBM.
When porting your applications to PASE for i, you might discover they rely on AIX libraries not included with it. Before moving these libraries to the IBM i system, identify the software product they came from and review its license terms. You may need to collaborate with IBM or a third party to bring over additional middleware dependencies.
