In a nutshell, the CLI allows users to interact with the system by entering text commands. This interface is essential for performing various administrative tasks, such as managing user profiles, monitoring system status, and handling jobs and printers.

What is the CLI on the AS400, iSERIES and IBM i Power System?

The command-line interface (CLI) on the IBM i Power system has remained almost identical to the old CLI on the legacy AS/400, and IBM iSeries machines.

What command can we run from the CLI?

Anything you like, as long as you are authorised to run it!

Common IBM i commands include:

  • WRKACTJOB: Work with active jobs, similar to the Task Manager in Windows.
  • WRKUSRPRF: Work with user profiles, allowing you to add, change, or delete user profiles.
  • WRKSPLF: Work with spool files, which are the printed output from jobs.
  • WRKWTR: Work with writers, managing printers and their statuses.

Of course, this list could go for years. There are thousands of different commands within the IBM i Operating system and all of them are accessible from your CLI.

So, lets modernize our language and stop calling it the green screen and use the correct modern name - it's the CLI.
