What types of libraries are used by the IBM i System?

The IBM i System utilises various types of libraries to organise and manage objects within the system. Library lists, which are associated with each job, specify the libraries that the job can access.

Here are the types of libraries used:

  • System Libraries: These libraries are supplied by IBM and contain system objects.
  • Product Libraries: Product libraries are added to the system when IBM products are installed. They contain objects associated with those specific products.
  • Current Libraries: Defined for individual user IDs, the current library serves as the default library for that user.
  • User Libraries: Organisations create user libraries to store and manage their programs, files and other custom objects.

In addition to these library types, it is important to note:

  • QSYS Library: Library descriptions, device descriptions, and user profiles are always stored in the QSYS library.
  • Storage Location: All other object types, excluding those mentioned above, can be stored in any library on the IBM i System.
